When God brought Israel out of Egypt, He prepared them to conquer the land of Canaan for their own. They were to completely cleanse the land of its evil and fill it with worship of the true God. Israel didn't do this and never completely turned back to God after that error. Our job is to constantly make stronger efforts to turn from evil and to God. We must cleanse our actions and our minds and fill them with God's grace and peace. This is the goal of Christians.
